For the restoration of historic buildings.

We work largely in accordance with the Burra Charter and are guided by a clear philosophy: to retain and protect as much of the original building fabric as possible.

The Sydney Restoration Company is a boutique building company established in 2000. We take pleasure in the abundant scope of conservation works found in Sydney’s many heritage buildings.

With experience in heritage work dating back to the 1980s, our team brings a thoughtful, highly skilled, hands-on approach to every project. Every project we undertake is treated with care and respect - for the structure, its history, and the people who use it.

We have the in-house capacity to deal with all aspects of building conservation, preservation and restoration, from remedial structural works to detailed joinery.

Whether a beautiful home or a public building, we will always strive for excellence in every undertaking.

We work closely with clients, architects, and conservation professionals to ensure each restoration is not only compliant but also true to the character and story of the building.

Open and honest communication is central to how we operate, and we see our role as both builders and careful custodians of Australia’s built heritage.

At the heart of everything we do is a genuine respect for detail, craftsmanship, and collaboration.

We feel privileged to contribute to the conservation of Sydney’s architectural heritage and are proud to play a small part in keeping these important buildings alive for future generations.

Our approach

01. ASSESSMENT & CONSULTATION

An initial site visit & documentation review is conducted to firstly understand the scope of the project.

Initial visual investigation and discussion around restoration methodology and associated budget estimates. The conservation and restoration methodology is undertaken in conjunction with heritage architects and conservation professionals as required to ensure compliance.

02. FORENSIC INVESTIGATION & TEST AREAS

Undertake forensic investigative work on test sections of the building or joinery, as recent layers are stripped back to reveal original fabric. Identifying and documenting original fabric for conservation or restoration, adjusting restoration methodology if required based on findings. Liaison with client, heritage architects and conservation professionals as required to confirm acceptance and approval of methodologies.

03. CRAFTSMANSHIP

Works commence in earnest to the agreed conservation and restoration methodologies. This phase includes the careful removal and tagging of existing fabric, and suring up the building as required to maintain structural integrity of remaining fabric whilst conservation and restoration works are underway. All works are undertaken utilising traditional construction techniques where possible.

04. SUPPORT & MAINTENANCE

We are available for ongoing support on an as needs basis to all our existing clients. This may include, but not be limited to;

  • salt removal from masonry (this is rarely a “one time fixes it forever” issue),

  • repolishing of traditional joinery where necessary in high traffic areas.

  • condition reports, and building a scope of works for further works
