Our services & technical expertise.

Our services cover the full scope of conservation, preservation and restoration, from early assessments, condition reports and planning to hands-on conservation and remedial works. This includes consulting and physical restoration works.

Consulting services

Our consulting and management services include:

  • Heritage building assessments and conditions reports

  • Conservation and restoration strategies

  • Heritage project management and collaboration with architects and consultants

  • Remedial and structural repairs

Our work includes the repair and replacement of deteriorated or damaged structural elements such as timber beams and lintels, slab walls, brickwork, stonework, piers and footings, roofs, and floors.

This includes specialist works such as the structural repairs and recladding of Sydney’s St James Anglican Church spire. These works included timber sarking repairs and the considerable task of conserving the extremely significant Cross and Orb. These works resulted in a Greenway UNESCO award for this project. All repairs are sympathetic to the building’s heritage, using traditional materials and techniques wherever possible to preserve the integrity of the original building.

  • Stone masonry and repairs

Utilising a team of expert stonemasons we undertake a wide range of restoration work, over many different types of stone, from minor render repairs and stone indents to stripping years of paint build up from stone, and full stone replacements.

We have experience working with a variety of stone types, overseeing all works to ensure we are preserving the original integrity of the heritage building.

  • Slate, metal and tile roofing

Whether it be Welsh Penrhyn slate, terracotta tile, lead, copper, zinc or galvanised iron, our team of highly qualified contractors have the necessary skills to produce the highest quality work.

  • Crack stitching repair in brick wall

    Crack stitching

When a building moves or foundations fail, it usually results in cracked walls. SRC is regularly contracted to remedy this issue.

After dealing with the movement that caused the problem, supporting the wall and clearing out the failed mortar, we insert an engineered, high tensile stainless steel helical bar that is grouted into place. We then point over these repairs with a traditional mortar. The end product shows no sign of repair and leaves the wall stable

  • Rising damp treatment and salt removal

Rising damp, which contains salt, either latent in the ground or the masonry, is drawn outward as the moisture carries it dries out. This drying process causes the efflorescent damage which is visible on so many masonry buildings, particularly in the lower courses.

Our team has the necessary skill and equipment to draw out these damaging salts and prevent their further in ingress into the building.

  • Chemical and mechanical damp proof course

Masonry, particularly sandstone and clay bricks are particularly hydroscopic, and will absorb ground water which contains varying salts. After drawing out these damaging salts, SRC can inject the affected masonry with a chemical damp proof course (DPC) effectively rendering the masonry hydrophobic (unable to absorb moisture.)

A more traditional way of combating this issue is to install mechanical, or physical DPC. This consists of a continuous layer of sheet metal placed into a bed joint to physically prevent the transfer of moisture and salt from the lower courses to the upper courses.

  • Custom copper rainwater head

    Rainwater goods

Repair and replacement of roof gutters, box gutters, rainwater heads, downpipes, rainwater tanks and flashings of every description are all part of what we offer. These are available in differing materials to suit the application.

From copper, lead and galvanised iron through to zinc and stainless steel, we have the expertise and capacity to satisfy even the most demanding client.

  • Man laying brickwork in a circular domed cistern

    Masonry works, repairs and repointing

Our skilled team is adept at identifying and resolving structural concerns, restoring, relaying and repairing heritage brickwork, and sourcing old and new bricks that work sympathetically with the original fabric. We also bring extensive expertise and skill in repointing (removing and replacing deteriorated mortar) to restore structural integrity.

Our trades carry out everything from simple structural work to highly detailed and architectural work. Our tradespeople are highly experienced and take great pride in their work, consistently delivering an excellent product every time.

  • Man doing detailed specialty carpentry work

    Carpentry and detailed joinery

We specialise in the meticulous conservation and restoration of weather damaged and time-worn joinery.

Doors, windows, stairs and floors all require a careful and knowledgeable approach. We take pride in our ability to restore even the most degraded woodwork, reviving their beauty and function with precision and care.

Carefully conserving original fabric, and introducing like for like timbers and traditional techniques, we breathe new life into joinery that might otherwise be lost - delivering results that are both authentic and visually striking.

  • Paint stripping and finishing

Where a paint finish currently exists, but a traditional shellac-based finish is required, the paint must be removed, necessary repairs made, and a new finish applied. This process requires exceptional skill and knowledge to produce an excellent finish.

Removing deeply ingrained layers of paint without damaging delicate mouldings - and applying a flawless, touch-worthy finish - requires unmatched skill. We consistently deliver results that satisfy the most discerning clients. Our reputation is built on being the best in the field, setting the benchmark for excellence.

  • Traditional plaster work

SRC has a long-standing reputation for excellence in the conservation and restoration of traditional plasterwork. Keeping significant areas of old plaster and carefully marrying in new work requires extreme skill and patience.

Our plasterers have the ability to produce the highest quality work, time and again. Whether ceilings, walls or traditionally run cornice and moulds, SRC will produce the highest quality work.

  • Metalwork and ironmongery

Whether restoring or reproducing heritage work, or introducing modern structural steel to support new construction, metalwork in all its forms is a specialised craft that demands precision, historical sensitivity, and technical know-how.

From balustrades and palisade fences to gates and architectural hardware, we bring the experience and capability to faithfully restore or reproduce items in cast or wrought iron. We ensure every detail is carefully considered to be true to the original – delivering results that preserve the integrity of the past while building strength for the future.
